Configuration Management in the Real World

Some practical advice on implementing CM today.

Managing today's configurations across a wide range of software and hardware presents many practical and cultural challenges. This seminar looks at the practical issues in establishing appropriate levels of control and how to implement configuration, change and release management in the real world.

10:30 -11:15 It's Not getting Any Easier!

Stewart Walker, Softlab.
In the old days we had IBM, then UNIX/Dec, then PC, then NT
Servers, then the Internet. Most major corporations still have all of these platforms to support applications on and those applications are now linked together. Stewart will review the implications of multi-platform support, the types of configuration items to be considered and look at the issues of cross platform impact analysis, change and configuration management. The talk will cover some example solutions with a review of the benefits of each approach.

11:45 - 12:30 Branching and Merging.

 Robert Cowham, Vaccaperna Systems
What are the options for branching and merging? Robert will present the options with an overview of their strengths and weaknesses - based on his very real experiences. Robert will discuss the mainline and promotional models - the classic release line branch. He will also provide practical guidance on the various patterns to look for when deciding when and how to branch and some more advanced options required for managing multiple components.

Paul O'Neill, Independent Consultant
Good attitude, changing paradigms and expectations are important aspects of implementing configuration management in the real world. Paul will cover 'switching people on', engaging their experience and co-operation and how to lead people into change and good practice. The real life horror stories are born out of Paul's direct and frustrating experiences! They will that illustrate some of the key management issues and the importance of focusing on the company's bottom line. 

14:15 - 15:00 Workshop Sessions facilitated by committee members 

Delegates will have the opportunity to join a session on implementing configuration, change or release management. This is an opportunity to share real world experiences and find new tips and ways of approaching implementation in the real world. Please bring along any current "challenges" that you would like to discuss.
