Developing the right implementation strategy for your CMDB/CMS
Wednesday 30th April 2008
Presented by Richard Lord, IBM Global Services
Richard's Presentation is now online as a PDF
Synopsis
This session will consider the techniques to improve requirements
gathering and design for a CMDB/CMS and the associated cost/benefit
implications. It will discuss the factors that affect implementation
strategy including organisation and cultural challenges and how to manage
the implementation through into production. It will address the
challenges of ensuring the CMDB/CMS is properly utilised in order to realise
the return on investment.
To realise the benefits of Configuration Management an organisation must
have a clear, common understanding of what Configuration Management is, what
it can/cannot provide, the organisational, cultural and cost implications of
each design decision, and the challenges in encouraging and enforcing the
use of Configuration Management capabilities. This extends to all
individuals and groups involved in providing, using or managing
configuration data and in on-going Configuration Management planning.
In considering these points, an effective implementation strategy must
reflect the need to communicate, educate and train, take into account the
implications of other IT and Business initiatives, ensure the scope of data
being managed is appropriate and develop the correct deployment approach.
This presentation will draw on real world experience to describe key
considerations for developing an implementation strategy, including
organisational and cultural aspects. It will discuss the approach to
requirements gathering and will explore how requirements affect strategy.
